Usually I forget my paperwork or the prize money or show up 5 hours late. This one was a doozie! For some reason, The Mirage sends us over to the MGM. The chips are tiny. Like the size of dimes. Instead of cards, we are using dice. Fich (not even signed up for TARGET) is the first to bust out. I realize that I have left the bust-out prize in my hotel room. I'm about to go upstairs to get it, but then remember that we are at a different hotel. Doh. Later, my table is 4-handed. The other tables are about 8-handed. "Isn't anyone balancing the tables?" Sabyl (on "maybe" list, but not signed up) is moved to my table. She has a ton of chips. About the only realistic part of the dream. I get dealt (rolled?) a 62 and go all-in. Sabyl calls with a 61. She promptly flops a word. I think it was "EXIDE." Don't ask me how you flop a word in dice-hold'em. Maybe the 6 was a "d" and the 1 was an "I"? I get my own flop somehow. I think I have flopped a flush in diamonds which would beat a flopped word, but then notice that two of the diamonds are really hearts. Oh well. I go scream at the MGM tournament director. "Next time you have a poker tournament, at least use CARDS!" Message-ID: <4846D907.736D2EFB@sgi.com> Hi all, Someone found a better rate for our time at the Mirage... ===================== Hey Ken, While flipping through the Fatwallet.com forums thread on Las Vegas Hotel rates, I came this recently posted one for the Mirage: 1) Mirage 2) Father's Day Offer 3) FATHER 4) Valid - June 11, 2008 - June 15, 2008 5) Expires - June 18, 2008 6) For All 7) Link to offer 8) Promo details - $79 weds thurs sun $119 fri sat ??? $10 upgrade to premium veiw room wed thurs sun ??? $20 upgrade to premium veiw room fri sat ??? $50 Credit to 'THE MENS SHOP' https://reservations.mgmmirage.com/bookingengine.aspx?host=promo&pid=160&code=FATHER&kbid=27920 Basically, it's a $79 weeknight / $119 weekend rate for the Mirage. I don't see anything on the Mirage website about the $50 Mens Shop credit thing, but the rate looks bookable by anyone through the link above. If I'm not mistaken, it's better than the poker rate you listed in earlier Target emails, and has no play requirements. Anyway, I just thought I'd pass that on. Those special deals tend to disappear after hotel occupancy goes up on those nights. Ken Kubey kubey at sgi.com (650) 933-3536 From kubey at sgi.com Tue Jun 17 17:13:28 2008 From: kubey at sgi.com (Ken Kubey) Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2008 14:13:28 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Target] 2008 Report Message-ID: <200806172113.OAA58414@summit.engr.sgi.com> Hi all, Here it is. The official 2008 Report. The 14th TARGET event was held at the Mirage. It was our 7th year there! Lucky Friday the 13th, 6/13. 10 a.m. Chris Dizon has all the comp slips ready to go! Hooray! About 20 of us meet for brunch. We are able to get several tables in the same area. Chris Dizon was the TD this year. Donna Harris helped set up the tournament. Again we used Patrick Milligan Tournament Timer. Thanks to Patti Beadles for bringing her laptop and getting it all set up. Thanks to Steve for helping me set up. Just 20 players this year. The tables: Rich Strauss Ray Klann Ross Poppel Ken Kubey Barbara Garrett Russ Fox Jenny Snyder Patti Beadles Dan Sammartino Len Marciano Rich Vehlow Michael Patterson Mark Rafn Kevan Garrett Marc Ferguson Rod Chavez Tony Goldstein Steve Nissman Jim Anderson Bob Jones A $200 buy-in got each of us 2000 in tournament chips. Cards were in the air very close to 12 noon. Two players were missing, but they were at the brunch, so I wasn't worried. This year we had big action very early. Rod lost most of his chips with the nut flush draw and two over cards. 15 outs twice. He went out a few hands later. Rod received a Beanie Baby fish, a $10 slot certificate and a roll of Lifesavers. Rod e-mailed me to let me know that his young son really likes the fish. Cool. No $10 Mirage coin this year. Due to silver prices going way up, there are no silver coin slots in Vegas now. Bummer. I make a steal raise with Ad2h. Patti defends. Flop 7-5-4, two hearts. Check, check. Turn 3h. I make a wheel. Patti bets 200, I raise to 600, she jams. I think for a long time. Maybe 40 seconds and call all-in thinking she might have a set or AhJc or Ah7d, etc. Nope. AhQh. I'm the third one out. Kevan is doing great. He flips over KK three times in the first hour. Someone goes out in 11th and we are down to the final table: Russ Fox 2200 Len Marciano 2800 Ross Poppel 3100 Marc Ferguson 3100 Kevan Garrett 10100 Dan Sammartino 4100 Rich Strauss 1400 Patti Beadles 7300 Jim Anderson 2000 Tony Goldstein 4000 I asked people to give me chip counts. I ask Ross... "I have 28." I write down 2800. He then says "Chips." "I have 28 chips, but I have 3100." Nice one. :-) Marc and Russ are the only final table repeats from 2007. Jim was the only rookie to make the final table. 1st and 2nd get $1500 entries in the WSOP. 3th gets $260. 4th gets $70. 5th gets a handshake. The tournament will end when we are down to two players. Final table notes... --- Aces Shmaces. Tony has AA vs. Rich's KK. Good karma? A king on the turn is music to Rich's ears. Jim has AA vs. Russ AQs. A queen on the flop gives Russ hope. A queen on the turn keeps him in the hunt. Kevan has AA vs. Marc's 98s on a flop of 9-7-X. It looks good for the son, and bad for the brother. Turn 6. More outs. River 9. Marc survives. Is this site rigged or what? --- Jim has AK vs. Tony's AJs. Flop brings a J. Tony rivers a flush to seal the deal. Mr. Anderson is obviously not "the one" as he goes out in 10th. Rich gets all-in with AK vs. Len's 88. The flop is T-8-X, all hearts. Rich takes the lead with a flush on the turn, but his hearts are broken by a T making Len a boat on the river. Russ raises, Marc and Ross jam it up. Russ thinks for a while and wisely folds AQ. Marc has QQ, Ross has AK. A queen pops up. Ross catches a ace, but it is too late. 8th for Ross. Dan takes AK against KQ and actually wins. He tells me: "The best hand won, write that down!" Russ is short-stacked and gets all-in with K6s. Marc again has QQ. Fox on the run. A 6 on the flop, but no more help. Russ is out in 7th. Tony picks a bad time to jam from the BB when Patti has KK in the SB. KK whips Q6s on a K-high flop. Len gets all-in with AT vs. Patti's 98s. I missed the board on this one, but Patti won. Len goes out on the bubble in 5th. Dan gets all-in with A5 vs. Patti's KT. Turn board is A-T-5-J giving Patti more outs. Amazingly Dan survives again with the best hand. The stacks are fairly even as 4-handed play goes on. The blinds are up to 300-600. Kevan jams with KdTd Patti calls with 8d8x. This is a very close coin flip. Kevan still has two overs and picks up a flush draw on the turn. But the river is a blank. Kevan goes out in 4th and gets $70. 3-handed, Patti and Marc are starting to pull away. Dan makes his stand with QQ and is in great shape against Marc's JTo. The flop is a PokerStars special: K-Q-9. A set for Dan, the nut straight for Marc. The turn is a J. "Pair the board." Dan says. River T. Straight on the board! Chop it up! This site is *so* rigged. Dan gets all-in with KJ vs. Marc's A9s. For once, Dan is behind when the money goes in. Marc makes the nut flush to end the tournament. Dan took 3rd place and got $260 for his efforts. Congratulations to Patti Beadles and Marc Ferguson. Marc wins TARGET in back-to-back fashion. Patti wins for her second time. First since 1999. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Craps run. Seven of us met at the Casino Royale across the street from the Mirage. Ray, Dan, Steve N., Barbara, Kevan and Ed Garrett and me. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. It was very tough to get on one of the $3 tables, but we finally managed to squeeze in after about 20 minutes. As you may know, I almost never make odds bets at the craps table. They are EV zero bets. I just think they are a waste of time and may cause me to lose too much. Later, I miss a come-out roll. I ask Steve if I can add $5 to his odds bet. He says sure. Someone asks why I don't just put the $5 on the pass line to take the point of 9 since I don't like to bet odds. I reply "I'm superstitious, I'm not stupid." laughter all around. With a point of 10. I have the dice. I also place 8 and bet a $5 hard eight. I roll the hard eight. Guy to my right says about me "This guy is on his own program." It was pretty funny. Kevan made a 5 late in the session. I was up $2 and quit right there. Kevan also hit a $2 12 early in the session and I think his dad hit a big 12 somewhere in there too. I think the group lost money, but we had fun. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks to everyone who played in TARGET and a big Thanks to all of the folks that sent checks in early. That really helps me a lot. I'll be sending out a survey soon. I hope everyone had a good time during the TARGET weekend. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stand by for the Post-TARGET report coming soon...
