The Story

Binion's Horseshoe, May 14, 1996 -- The tournament started with a record 295 players, including rec.gamblers Steve Brecher, Michelle Chiou, Chris Ferguson, Ed Hill, John Saer, and Steve Zolotow.

One of the most interesting starting tables (#36) featured 3 world champions -- Berry Johnston, Mansour Matloubi and Bobby Baldwin -- in consecutive seats. Ed Hill was also at this table, two seats to the right of Johnston.

Late in the first (two hour) round of the tournament, Phil Hellmuth was given a twenty minute suspension for his behavior. Tournament director Jack McClelland also announced that if a player received a suspension and was eliminated, the player would be suspended at the beginning of the next World Series of Poker event he or she entered. There was a round of applause for this announcement.

As the applause subsided, Bobby Baldwin yelled over to Doyle Brunson, seated at a nearby table, that the proper punishment should be to put the player's chips into the next pot. Ed Hill retorted that if that were done, John Bonetti would win every tournament.

At the end of day 1:
