The Showdown
Binion's Horseshoe, May 2, 1996 - Al Krux, a 52-year-old professional
poker player from Syracuse, New York, topped a record field of 278 entrants
last night to win the 10th event of the 27th annual World Series of Poker at
Binion's Horseshoe Hotel and Casino. For his first-place finish in the $1,500
buy-in pot-limit Texas Hold'em competition, Krux was awarded $156,375 and a
custom-designed 14-karat gold bracelet to commemorate his victory.
This is the first World Series of Poker title for Krux, who through the years
has finished in the money in numerous major poker tournaments, including four
previous World Series competitions. A former diamond merchant, Krux has been
playing poker for 25 years.
Placing second in the pot-limit Hold'em event and winning $79,230 was Gherardo
Crespi of Milan, Italy. A 46-year-old retired businessman, Crespi has won
several European poker tournaments, but this is his first time to finish in
the money at the World Series.
J.C. "Miami John" Cernuto of Las Vegas captured third place and $39,615. A
52-year-old professional player, Cernuto won the $1,500 buy-in limit Seven
Card Stud High-Low Split (Eight or Better) event held April 26 and now has 11
in-the-money finishes at the Horseshoe's annual poker tournament.
The 1996 World Series of Poker continues at the Horseshoe through May 16. The
$2,500 buy-in limit Seven Card Stud High-Low Split (Eight or Better)
competition begins today at noon, followed by the $5,000 buy-in no-limit
Deuce-to-Seven draw event at 5 p.m. The $2,500 buy-in limit Omaha High-Low
Split (Eight or Better) event is scheduled for May 3 at noon.
More than 4,000 entrants - representing at least 20 countries - are expected
to participate in this year's World Series, and the total money distributed is
anticipated to be in excess of $11 million.
