The Showdown
Binion's Horseshoe, April 30, 1996 -- John Morgan, a 46-year-old
businessman from Wolverhampton, England, topped a record field of 405 players
last night to win the eighth event of the 27th annual World Series of Poker at
Binion's Horseshoe Hotel and Casino. For his first-place finish in the $1,500
buy-in no-limit Texas Hold'em competition, Morgan was awarded $227,815 and a
custom-designed 14-karat gold bracelet to commemorate his victory.
"It's a great feeling - fantastic," he said. "I'm over the top." This was only
the second attempt at a World Series title for Morgan, who placed fifth in
this same event last year. He also has finished in the money in several
European poker tournaments, including the British championship competition.
Placing second in the no-limit Hold'em event and winning $115,425 was George
Githens, 23, of Orlando, Florida. A part-time student and a poker supervisor
at Grand Casino in Gulfport, Mississippi, Githens entered the World Series of
Poker for the first time this year.
Bobby Hoff of Downey, California, finished in third place and won
$57,713. With his latest award, Hoff now has to his credit six in-the-money
finishes at the World Series and also has cashed in numerous other major poker
competitions.
The 1996 World Series of Poker continues at the Horseshoe through May 16. The
$1,500 buy-in pot-limit Omaha event begins today at noon, followed by the
$1,500 buy-in pot-limit Texas Hold'em competition on May 1.
More than 4,000 entrants - representing at least 20 countries - are expected
to participate in this year's World Series, and the total money distributed in
anticipated to be in excess of $11 million.
