Las Vegas, May 10, 1997.
About half the sky over Las Vegas was blue and sunny today, while the
rest was cloudy. There was a light breeze most of the day and the
temperature sign on top of the Horseshoe read 98 degrees at 3:00 PM. My
car thermometer read 95 degrees when I was driving home around 8:30 PM.
I haven't checked it out in the play-by-play data yet, but Jack McClelland
reported that Mel Judah survived at least 16 all-in situations before
winning today's $5,000 7 Card Stud Event #18.
On one of Mel's all-in situations, Vasilis Lazarou announced that he was
going to do the last card drawing out this time and eliminate Mel. Mel
told the Dealer to "Give him the 2 of hearts", and the dealer did indeed
give Vasilis the 2 of hearts to keep Mel in the tournament.
Don Larrimore, the ace reporter for Binion's Daily Tournament write ups
advises me that eleven of the first seventeen tournament winners were
foreign born. I guess today makes 12/18.
After fooling around with downloading and installing plug ins and getting
error messages and trying again etc., I finally found out from one of the
technicians that you must be using Windows 95 to see the video feeds. My
old Windows 3.1 won't cut the mustard. Bummer.
Smoking Survey: T. J. Cloutier, Freddy Deeb and Ralph Levine comprised
one of the largest smoking contingents seen so far at a 1997 WSOP Final
Table.
Kim Scheinberg earned praise from Doyle Brunson for her gritty
performance in today's $5,000 Limit Holdem early going, but the likes of
Doyle, Thomas Chung and Erik Seidel at her table were too much to
overcome.
TARGET, the rec.gambling.poker satellite, for a satellite, for the
$10,000 main event at this year's WSOP saw Jeff Siegal, Ray Didonata,
Clark Olson and Rob Fagen best about 36 other entrants to continue on the
path towards a Final Event seat. Hopefully this will be the year that a
TARGET winner gets into the big show.
I managed to give Clark Olson a double through on the first hand of
TARGET when his pocket aces had little trouble with my AK. As I see it, I
finished at least 5th in TARGET, and maybe higher, if some of the four
winners don't eventually cash in the main event. My computer game booby
prize could be the only positive return anyone gets from TARGET. Also, I
wasn't too disappointed with an early (make that read very early) bust
out, because it let me get some needed sleep and re-enforced my resolve
to stay away from tournaments.
PENALTY BOX
Three penalties have been assessed during the last 24 hours.
The WSOP Floorpeople are strictly enforcing the rules, with zero
tolerance. Although no official list of violators is maintained, Steve
Morrow, Head Assistant Tournament Co-ordinator, advises me that all of the
following have received a 20 minute penalty during the 1997 WSOP. Most of
the penalties were for using abusive language or throwing cards.
Huck Seed | Johnny Chan | Unknown | Blair Rodman |
Phil Helmuth | John Bonetti | Unknown | Paul Ladanyi |
J. J. Volpe | Nhut Tran | Jeff Chapman |

Binion's still had some of their 1997 WSOP commemorative coins ($20 +
tax) available today. As long as they are available, I will purchase a
coin(s) for anyone who will pick them up COD from me in Las Vegas
sometime in the near future. I don't want to get into the mailing
business though. They don't have a whole lot of them left.
SINGLE TABLE SATELLITES
(Becky Kerber and Barbara Lotief)
$145 buy-in 7 Card Stud single tables satellites for the Ladies was the
featured satellite today. These are eight handed, players start with $400
in chips, and the winner gets a non transferrable $1,060 LAdies 7 Card
Stud seat plus $20 acash.
As of 8:00 PM tonight, around twenty $10,000 No-Limit single table
satellites had been held today. Ten players buy-in for $1,010 each and
receive $4,000 in chips. Blinds start at $50 and $100.
SUPER SATELLITES
(Patty Hughes and Rudy Lotief)
Tonight's No-Limit Super Satellite which started at 8:30 PM is the next
to last one. Tonight, by adding the Final Table area, they were able to
start with 15 ten handed tables competing for $10,000 Final Event seats
and cash. Buy-ins are $220 for $200 in chips, and re-buys can be made for
$200 during the first hour of play. Blinds start at $5/10 and increase
every 20 minutes.
There was a very, very long line for a long time when they started taking
sign-ups (around 5:30 PM, I think) and there were many who had to settle
for alternate status.
Another Super Satellite for Sunday's Ladies 7 Card Stud Event was held
this afternoon at 5:00 PM. A $50 buy-in got $200 in chips, and $40
re-buys could be made during the first hour. The winners get $1,060 seats
plus cash.
$10,000 CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRANTS
Updated through Friday night 9 May 1997
Entrant #16, Sephen Kaufman and Entrant #39 David Welch both withdrew
from this year's final Event, and rolled their entries over into next
year's final Event. Their slots were taken by a couple of yesterday's
satellite winners.
I had no idea that roll overs to next year were allowed.

HELP !!!!
I am looking for a 1997 WSOP $10,000 Championship Event participator who
will allow me to unobtrusively sweat him/her (and record for posterity, in
detail, all of her/his hole cards and how he/she played them) through to
victory or elimination. Jim Albrecht has sanctioned this project, and
CARDPLAYER is interested in doing an article on this subject.
ALL I NEED IS A VOLUNTEER.
Reasons for Volunteering:
- I will emanate positive vibes to the Poker God in her/his behalf.
- I might distract the competition more than him/her.
- The Volunteer may play better than otherwise, since her/his play will
become a public record.
- Good P. R. for the Volunteer.
- The knowledge that opponents may gain about his/her playing style can
be manipulated to her/his advantage in the future.
- He/she would be making a worthwhile contribution to the Poker world,
and would have a detailed memento of her/his participation in the 1997
WSOP.

WSOP NOTES
Thanks to everyone for the many kind messages I have received regarding
my WSOP efforts. I will get around to acknowledging all, but it may
take a while.
Several have noted that my 1996 WSOP Final Table data was in a "plainer
English" format than the evolving code and abbreviations I am using for
the 1997 WSOP. This is true, and I am not even very pleased with the 1996
output, and I wish it weren't so, but I don't think I could have managed
the volume of data, within the time constraints I have set for myself,
using the limited equipment and skills that I had (have) available, if I
had not adopted this type of format.
Basically, I am recording every bet and every visible card of every hand
at every final table (a couple of goofs, so far) in the 1997 WSOP. I am
using a micro tape recorder, and except for the two goofs, I don't believe
that I have missed recording a single card or bet on any hand. The problem
arises in transcribing the data from tape to Email so that I can get it to
Chuck Weinstock at ConJelco. In addition to being tedious and slow, some
typo errors do occur when you factor in my hunt and peck typing, the fact
that very little proof reading has been done, and a sometimes less than
bright eyed and bushy tailed condition by yours truly.
Some have suggested that I just do the key hands and do them in a flowier
manner, but this doesn't interest me, because that is counter to my
primary objective of producing a complete record of all available actions
in the 1997 WSOP.
It is my current intention to massage the data at some future point,
which would include making it more readable. However, this good intention
may or may not materialize.

Vasilis Lazarou finishes 2nd and Mel Judah wins the $5,000
7 Card Stud WSOP Championship at 7:55 PM.

Final Table Chip Standings - Seat Positions

|
|
Battling through a final table full of extraordinary hands,
Mel Judah captured the $5,000 buy in Seven Card Stud title
from a record number of contestants he called "the toughest
stud field I've ever played against." For his victory, the
49 year-old Briton born in India was awarded $176,000 and
his second gold WSOP winner's bracelet. This 15th finish in
the money brought Judah's total earnings to $553,391. In
1989 he took the $1,500 Seven Card Stud championship and has
been runner-up twice since then among his six final-table
finishes.
"It's been a long time. It's great to return to the winner's
circle," enthused Judah, a former ladies hairdresser who has
been a poker professional for 17 years. He has now won seven
major tournaments in the U.S. and abroad. He learned poker
as a child from his father when the family lived in India.
Judah was the second Briton to win a title this year.
"After the last two weeks when nothing stood up, today was
my day," he said. "It all came good when I needed it. This
win at the World Series, which is the ultimate tournament
experience, makes up for the bad times."
Twice within 30 minutes, Judah caught straights on the river
to defeat runner-up Vasilis Lazarou who held early trips
each time but couldn't improve them. These monster
pots, probably the most dramatic at the final table,
essentially won the title for Judah. Said Tournament
Coordinator Jack McClelland, "The draw-outs and beats were
amazing."
In their 45-minute heads-up struggle, Judah and Lazarou both
fought back to regain lost chip leads. Finally, with Judah
enjoying a huge advantage, Lazarou was all in on third
street with a pair of queens against Judah's pair of fours
with a king. The pot totalled $164,000. Lazarou never
improved, while Judah made kings up on fifth street and
kings full on the friendly river.
"That was a big effort. It was impossible to beat him the
way the cards ran," said Lazarou as he collected 2nd place
prize money of $101,200. He had come within a poker whisker
of winning his second gold bracelet this year, having taken
the $2,500 Stud event last week. Lazarou, a 41 year-old
Greek-born clothier and dedicated poker player, said "It was
a great tournament. I expected to win, so I'm a little
disappointed tonight. But I'm very happy with my finishes
here this year." His World Series winnings now total
$485,760.
Third place went to longtime chip leader Ralph Levine, who
suffered beats which drew gasps from the spectators. The
$52,800 for his fourth WSOP money finish brought his overall
earnings to $79,663. Levine, 65, a retired scrap metal
dealer still looking for his first tournament victory,
echoed comments by several champions this year; "The players
lately are getting so much better. And the foreigners who
come to America are playing really good poker." Expressing
dissatisfation with the fast limit changes at the final
table, Levine said, "I'm disappointed I didn't do better. I
feel the high limits take all the play away."
But, he said, "I love the two-day tournament format, and I
look forward to these delightful three weeks every year of
eating and playing poker at the World Series."
Levine, after starting with a pair of aces against Lazarou's
pair of threes, was all in and led through sixth street when
Lazarou caught a straight draw. Both players were dealt
sixes on the river, Lazarou's completing the killing
straight which eliminated Levine.
Freddy Deeb, a 41 year-old former mechanical engineer and a
poker professional since 1975 when he came to the U.S. from
his native Lebanon, took fourth place money of $30,800. It
was his 10th time in the money, including one gold bracelet
and six final tables. His WSOP earnings now total $429,792.
"With those high limits, everybody has enough only to play a
hand or two," Deeb said. "But I still played bad -- I could
have played a little better." He added that "I'll give the
Championship Event my best shot. I think I have a good shot
-- no limit is my best game."
Fifth place, in "the first tournament I've ever played,"
went to Mickey Seagle, 54, an educational motivator who
rarely plays poker. He won $26,400 and said, "I've wanted
to play at the World Series for 20 years, wanted to win a
bracelet. This year I decided I'd come and give it a shot.
I didn't play well the last few hands, but overall I think I
did pretty well. It was a lot of fun, with many classy
players." Seagle was eliminated when he went all in with
high cards showing and was caught bluffing by Lazarou who
had a straight in five cards.
Bruno Micchiardi, 55, a retired Italian businessman who
plays regularly on the European tournament circuit, took
sixth place, his WSOP total earnings now $28,510.
He was preceeded out by Skip Wilson whose 7th place finish
brought his winnings to $40,508 in four times in the money.
Playing his third final table, Wilson was knocked out when
he never bettered his initial pair of nines, while Seagle
began with tens which became trips.
Eighth place went to tournament star T.J. Cloutier, his 25th
finish in the money at the World Series where he has now
earned $1,101,526. Cloutier has gold bracelets, three
runner-up finishes and 19 final tables in 25 times in the
money here.
