Las Vegas, April 27, 1997.
Another beautiful day in Las Vegas. Sunny with a light breeze and a high
temperature in the 80's
Smokers Note: Danny Dang and Rupert Housden were the only smokers at the
Pot Limit Omaha final table. Dr. Phil Earl who is a very dramatic person,
expressed his displeasure that there were any smokers in the group. He
might have been really unhappy, if he had not been at the opposite end of
the table from the smokers.
Binion's still had some of their 1997 WSOP commemerative coins available
today.
Michael Davis began final table play with only $9,000 in chips which was
only 2 % of the total, and survived many all in situations to become chip
leader when heads up play began and finally finished 2nd.
Lindy Chambers, who is a good old boy from Louisiana, had several choice
comments:
To Michael Davis during fairly early play: "I'm hoping you go broke.
You're the only one that has less chips than me."
To nobody in particular: "I find it very, very hard to play this game
perfectly."
To the Chip leaders: "You need to get some of these short stacks out, but
not me."
On several occasions when going all in, Dr. Phil Earl would methodically
count out his bet in stacks of 5 or 10, slam the last stack on the table
and then taunt the rest of the players with a loud and dramatic "Come and
get it."
I talked with rg'er Ed Hill to congratulate him on his 15th place finish
that paid him $10,880 in Event #1, which was limit holdem and had 544
entries. My congratulations turned into condolences after Ed told me that
he had been the co chip leader with 17 players remaining and then in
short order had his AK beaten by AQ, his KJ lose to KT, his AK lose to KQ
and he was finally eliinated when his pocket 8's ran into pocket 9's.

$1500 Pot Limit Omaha WSOP Championship at 7:49 PM.

Final Table Chip Standings - Seat Positions
|
|
|
Chris Bjorin, one of the most popular and successful players
on the world poker tournament circuit, finally won his first
WSOP gold bracelet, defeating a record field to take the
$1,500 buy in Pot Limit Omaha title. The hard-fought
victory, worth $169,200, was the largest prize ever won by
the Swedish-born international gaming compiler, wine
connoisseur and gourmet.
"I feel very good," said Bjorn, 50, who has now made the
final table at the last three World Series pot limit Omaha
events. "This was a very interesting final table, with good
players with different styles -- some very tight, some very
unpredictable and therefore dangerous."
The victory was Bjorin's 15th time in the money at the WSOP
in eight disciplines and brought his overall earnings to
$384,443. He has won nine other major tournaments in the
U.S. and Europe.
Bjorin, who had or was near the chip lead for most of the
final table play, was at about a one and a half to one
disadvantage when he began heads-up play against Michael
Davis. But he immediately reversed that position, going all
in with A-10-10-3 against Davis's A-K-3-7 and winning with
a flopped set of tens. Soon thereafter Davis went all in
with A-10-9h-6h and Bjorin called with Ks-Js-4c-2c. The
flop of 5-4h-3h gave Davis a flush draw which didn't
materialize on the turn or river -- J-Q -- giving Bjorin the
$170,000 pot and the title.
Davis, 33, nicknamed "Pizza Man" because he owns two pizza
delivery firms, collected $84,600 for his runner-up finish.
He hadn't played any table poker for a full year before
arriving at this World Series, just a bit of computer poker.
"I'm very happy," he said. "This is my biggest tournament
win by far. With two tables left, I was the shortest stack,
then managed to double up and go on to the final table --
where I was very much the shortest stack. I would have been
very glad to come in 6th or 7th."
Third place went to poker veteran Chau Giang, 42, who came
to the United States from his native Vietnam in 1980 and
became a fulltime player two years later. This was his 13th
in-the-money finish at the WSOP, including one gold
bracelet, and the prize money of $42,300 brought his overall
winnings to $250,053. He was eliminated when Bjorin flopped
a familar set of tens. "I'm certainly happy to finish
third," Giang said."It was a tough final table and they
played very well."
Phil Earle, 49, a practicing medical doctor and a fixture on
the tournament circuit, took fourth place money of $27,495
after he went all in with A-K-K-7 double suited but lost to
Giang's Ad-3d-Q-8 when the board showed Qd-4d-2/10d-5.
"I just got a bad beat," Earle said. "It's a great honor to
be at the final table with these fine players. And I'd like
to say that the European players conduct themselves with
elegance during the tournament and in side games." This was
Earle's 13th time in the money at the WSOP where he has now
won $289,579.
Fifth place went to Indonesian-born Roy Thung, a longtime
U.S. resident and a private investor who had not finished in
the money at the World Series and is still looking for his
first tournament win: "I've come close many times," he
said, "but I always lose in the end."
Rupert Housden, a regular poker player in Europe, finished
sixth, his best-ever financial showing in a tournament.
"Considering that I began with the chip lead, I would have
liked to do better," said Housden, 34, who had very few
playable hands at the final table.
Placing seventh was Lindy Chambers, who was the first player
eliminated after two full hours of extremely cautious play
in which every all-in bet was successful.
Trai "Danny" Dang, another Vietnamese tournament regular,
finished eighth, his 11th time in the money at the WSOP
