WHIPPERSNAPPERS
Two young movie stars appear today, as rumored, to play in
the press tournament and the Super Satellite. It was like
the World Series of Poker had just been discovered by
Hollywood.
Meanwhile, we have a Final Table to conclude.
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION
Berry Johnston didn't show his hand when Sam Grizzle turned
over Aces. Berry was last heard saying something about
drawing dead. Johnston left in 21st place.
Mario Esquerra lost almost all of his chips, when his Jacks
were losers to Grizzle's Queens. Now all-in with A J, it was
his nemesis Grizzle who caught a flush with the Q 5 of
Diamonds to crack Mario's Aces and Jacks.
Erik Seidel has made a fortune playing poker. He's now 10th
on the all-time money list. He's more concerned with getting
chips than with making it into the money in a tournament.
Surinder Sunar, Dan Alspach and Nhut Tran like that about
Erik Seidel. They were all short stacked and facing
elimination.
Seidel went all-in with a pair of 7's. David Grey called him
with K Q. A King came on the river to save the endangered
stacks and send Erik Seidel out in 19th. One out of the
money.
CLOSE-UPS
Dan Heimiller couldn't get a hand for the last hour. He
mucked his last one when John Cernuto showed an A Q which
was duplicated on the board. Heimiller was 12th.
David Tavernier went all-in with 8's. Again it was John
Cernuto who did the honors. Cernuto's Kings stood up and
Tavernier stood down in 11th.
Joe Macchiaverna had every reason to be hopeful when he went
all-in with A K. Dan Alspach had A Q. Sadly for Joe, Alspach
had the Queen of Clubs. When the dealer put the fourth club
on the river, Joe Macchiaverna had some sarcastic things to
say to her on his way out in 10th.
THE STAGE IS SET
All the world's a stage and we are but players on it:
Seat 1 | Bob Redman | $77,000 | Liberty MO |
Seat 2 | Kevin McBride | 68,000 | Boca Raton FL |
Seat 3 | John Bonetti | 32,500 | Houston TX |
Seat 4 | Anthony Tran | 28,000 | Monterey Park CA |
Seat 5 | John Cernuto | 124,000 | Las Vegas |
Seat 6 | Sam Grizzle | 85,000 | Garden Grove CA |
Seat 7 | Patrick Bruel | 54,000 | Paris FRANCE |
Seat 8 | Men Nguyen | 49,000 | Bell Gardens CA |
Seat 9 | Dan Alspach | 42,500 | La Jolla CA |
Prize Money
1st | $224,000 |
2nd | 112,000 |
3rd | 56,000 |
4th | 33,600 |
5th | 25,200 |
6th | 19,600 |
7th | 14,000 |
8th | 11,200 |
9th | 8,960 |
Dan Alspach is the only player present that has a tournament
named after him. That doesn't impress Anthony Tran. When Dan
has to go all-in with the K Q of Spades, Tran calls with
pocket 5's. Alspach gets the nut flush on the river, but
only after Anthony Tran makes 5's full of 7's. Dan Alspach
still has a tournament named after him but is 9th.
John Bonetti never had enough chips to play his power game.
When Bonetti goes all-in with J 10 of Diamonds, Men Nguyen
is not intimidated. He calls with A 9. Two diamonds come on
the flop but no more appear. Ace high Nguyens. Bonetti is
8th.
Anthony Tran didn't make enough from knocking Dan Alspach
out to last long. He raises all-in with Q 10 of hearts. He
flops up and down, but John Cernuto has Kings. One of
Cernuto's Kings is a spade. Four spades arrive to take the A
Tran out of town in 7th.
Sam Grizzle is as tough as his name. But he can't seem to
scare the cards into his hand. Going all-in with A Q, he's
called by Bob Redman with K J. A Jack flops to tenderize Sam
in 6th.
Kevin McBride is the bridesmaid when his A 10 is met by Bob
Redman's Queens. Kevin is wedded to 4th place.
The four remaining players negotiate a save and play on.
Men Nguyen was steaming yesterday, because of the beats he
took. Try as he might, he wasn't able to dissippate the
steam today, at the Final Table. He felt players were
playing bad cards against him and catching. In his unique
fashion, Men wasn't shy about telling these players what
they'd done wrong and how lucky they'd been to beat "the
Master." Men often refers to himself in the third person.
In his all-in hand, Men had an A 7 of Diamonds. John Cernuto
had Q 10. To put a fitting ending to this event, for the
Master, he flopped the nut flush draw. John hit two pair
with Queens and 10's. Someone was going to get there and it
wouldn't be Nguyen. His diamond never came and a 10 on the
river filled Cernuto up.
Filled up with frustration was Men Nguyen in 4th place.
John Cernuto should be nicknamed "Miami Heat" he'd been
running so good. But he finally cools off enough to have to
go all-in with K 8. Patrick Bruel calls with A 9. John flips
his cards back over on the flop, he's drawing dead. When did
Patrick like his hand? When the flop came A A 9.
At the start of heads up play, Bob Redman has $350,000,
Patrick Bruel has $210,000.
Heads up, the victor is usually the aggressor. Today that
was Patrick Bruel, the French movie star. With two players,
the blinds are continuous. They will eat up the largest
stacks.
Bob Redman had been table chief all day. He'd been smoking.
Patrick Bruel took over that role with no reservations.
Raising nearly every hand, Bruel acted as if he had good
cards, whether he did or not.
In the climax of the scene, Redman is all-in with 8 7. Bruel
has 9 7. Could the nine actually play to give Bruel the
title? Yeah, it could and did. The last board was Q 5 3 6
10.
With all the fuss being made in the other room over the hot
young American movie stars, Patrick Bruel picked up the
bracelet and said "Pretty."
What he really was saying was, "You can't upstage me, boys.
I'm the movie star who can play poker."

None of these esteemed players and movie stars made the
final table.
With 12 Championship seats being given away, the action is
at the last two tables.
Two players are knocked out in the last hand of three tables
setting up:
The Final Two Tables:
Table 1
Seat 1 | Jim Payton | $8,500 | Canby IN |

Seat 4 | Taz Kampf | 5,000 | Yucaipa Ca |
Seat 5 | Harry Thomas | 13,500 | Ft Lauderdale FL |
Seat 6 | Kevin McBride | 10,000 | Boca Raton FL |
Seat 7 | Dewey Weum | 4,000 | Monona WI |
Seat 8 | Anne Spinetti | 6,500 | Las Vegas |
Seat 9 | (empty) |
The countdown begins.
FIVE to go.
18th. John Bradley is all-in with A 2. He misses on a flush
draw and loses to Steve Melton's A 10.
FOUR to go
17th. This is painful to watch. Fariborz Azima raises all-in
with J J. Roy Flowerday calls with A Q. The flop comes Q 8
8, the turn a Jack. Azima has a full house. The river is a
Queen. Flowerday has a bigger full house. Four lead changes
in one hand.
THREE to go.
16th. Taz Kampf is running low, he raises all-in with pocket
9's. His raise isn't enough to stop Bruce Atkinson from
calling from his big blind with A 7. An Ace flops.
TWO to go, no one can breathe.
15th. Glenn Cozen is all-in with A Q. Phat Lam calls with Q
J. The turn comes a Jack.
ONE to go.
Jeff Norman says "The tournament will be easy after this."
14th. Anne Spinetti has six chips left. Four are taken by
the big blind. Kevin McBride is also short. The loser of
this hand will likely be out. Kevin raises from the button,
all-in, with 7 chips.
Anne thinks for awhile then throws her last two chips in.
Kevin turns over a 9 7. Anne has a J 8. The flop comes K 7
6, the turn an 8. Anne has 8's, Kevin has 7's and is up and
down. The river is a 5. Kevin has a straight.
The ever gracious Anne Spinetti is the last one out of the
money. She says "Good luck, guys." as she leaves.
Now all there is to decide, is who will get the seats and who
is left with only the cash.
Trust me, the tension is so thick you couldn't cut it with a
knife.
First Jim Walterburg has to raise all-in in front of the
blinds. This is a perfect setup for Jim to fail for the
fifth time to get a seat. Walterburg has A 3. Bob Loar has
Jacks in the big blind. Jim's girl friend screams as an Ace
flops.
Next Gus Echeverri has to raise all-in. He, too, doesn't
have enough chips to get through the blinds. Gus has A 10.
Jim Payton calls with pocket 7's. The entire Echeverri fan
club screams as an Ace flops.
How much longer can this go on?
No longer.
Dewey Weum is all-in for the big blind. He has K 4. Steve
Melton has K Q. No four comes. Queen plays, Dewey pays.
The winners for Super Satellite #24 were:
Vic Kramer
Phat Lam
Steve Melton
Bruce Atkinson
Jeff "Scooter" Norman
Harry Thomas Jr
Kevin McBride
Jim Payton for the second time
Bob Loar for the second time
Gus Echeverri for the second time
Roy Flowerday for the second time
And Jim Walterburg, after five Final Tables, gets into the Big
Dance.
SINGLE TABLE SATELLITES
(Becky Kerber, Barbara Lotief and Terry Vanderlip)
Single Table Satellites are run continuously 21 hours every
day (8:00 AM until 5:00 AM) and usually last around 90
minutes. There are featured Satellites each day for the next
day's event, as well as other Satellites depending on
demand. Single Table Satellites for the $10,000 Main event
and for the next no-limit Holdem event are spread
frequently. Binion's charges $10 per player in a Satellite.
For the $1,010 buy-in Single Table $10,000 Satellites, ten
players start with $4,000 each in chips. The blinds start at
$25/50 and increase every 20 minutes. The winner gets a
non-transferrable seat in the Championship Event.
LAS VEGAS WEATHER
The Temperature sign atop Binion's Horseshoe read 75 degrees
at 3:00 PM on Sunday afternoon. The sky was partly cloudy,
sunny, blue and hazy. The wind was out of the SW at 10 to
20mph most of the day.
$10,000 CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL DAY
ESPN will be doing TV coverage of the Final Table of the
$10,000 Championship event, and it is scheduled to be aired
on 12 July.
The Final Table will be held in the Special Events room
(which has been the location of the 20 table Poker room
during the 1998 WSOP) and Vince Van Patten will be the
Celebrity Host for the telecast. Bleachers will surround the
Final Table in the Special Events room, and a large screen
TV will be set up in the Tournament Pavilion.
Jim Albrecht says "We expect to exceed the record 312
entries of last year."
LIVE INTERNET COVERAGE
Won't happen this year. Last year's attempted live internet
coverage didn't work out too well, and Jim Albrecht says
"We'll have to wait until the technology catches up, before
we try it again."
1998 WSOP vs 1997 WSOP
Things are starting to wind down a bit at the 1998 WSOP,
which is the normal pattern of the past. Many players have
come, lost their stakes, and are now on the rail, or have
gone back home. The long lists for games that were prevalent
a week ago are much shorter now, and there actually was an
empty table in the main Poker room around 6:00 PM today.
Jim Albrecht said that overall, the 1998 WSOP is about
"flat" from last year. The Tournament Prize Pool is down,
but has been picking up the last couple of days.
Supervisor John "Scoff" Sheffield said that the high-limit
side action is down from last year, and Jimmy Stefan said
things were about the same as last year in the main Poker
room. Super Satellites are up, and Single Table Satellites
are about the same.
A Survey of 26 players in the high-limit side action games,
showed six believing that the side action area was busier
this year, eight feeling that it was slower, and twelve who
thought it was about the same.
BONETTI's CHEERING SECTION
Phil Hellmuth Jr. was a one man cheering section for John
Bonetti at the Final Table, as he had been for many hours
the previous day. Phil clapped loudly every time anything
good happened to John. When John made a successful steal, it
earned applause, or when John was the big blind and everyone
folded, etc..
Sam Grizzle reacted to this by applauding for himself, when
he did good, and trading quips with John and Phil.
When John was down to his last chips, Sam said "John, I
believe you would do better without Phil. I'd send him to
the showers." John allowed as how Sam might be right.
SCRAMBLE'S HELP ?
Anthony Tran (not to be confused with An Tran), requested a
big scramble from the dealer. Didn't help much, because he
busted out a few hands later.
SEAT REVERSALS
Men Nguyen and Kevin McBride had to wait until one player
was eliminated (and there was more room at the table) before
Jack McClelland would allow them to reverse their chairs and
sit in them backwards.
MASTER and MIAMI
When they were down to four players, Men "Master" Nguyen was
taking a lot of time on a hand, and Miami John, who was not
in the hand, called time on Men. Men did not appear to
appreciate John's action, and took his full one minute
countdown before folding.
On the next hand, Men obstinately delays, when it is his
turn to call the blind or fold. Miami John calls time again,
and Men folds before his count down is over.
Shortly thereafter, Miami and Master play two hands heads
up. Men check raises the flop on both hands, and John
re-raises each time. The second hand is Men's last, when his
flush draw doesn't get there, and John's two pair fill on
the river.
THE BIG RED ONES
They broke out the red $10,000 chips for the first time at
today's $5000 Limit Holdem Final Table.
ROUNDERS
165. | Matt Damon |
166. | Edward Norton |
These entries on the big grease board today, made it
official. The stars of the poker movie, ROUNDERS, will play
in the $10,000 Championship Event. They both participated in
today's Press Tournament and the final Super Satellite also.
McCLELLANDisms
Someone in today's audience observed that Matt Damon
probably stood a better chance of winning the $10,000 No
Limit Championship than Bob Stupak. Jack quipped "Jack
Strauss has a better chance than either one of them."
Jack said, "Tomorrow's $10,000 Event will start at 12:00
noon, MY TIME."
An Tran was in the stands watching Anthony Tran, and Jack
said "Anthony Tran is the new Tran. The old Tran is on the
rail."

Formal, official Deals at the WSOP are done in private,
under the supervision and guidance of Jack McClelland, WSOP
Tournament Co-ordinator. Deals represent a reallocation, or
split of the announced remaining prize pool, that is
agreeable to all remaining players. All remaining players do
not have to participate in an official Deal, as long as all
remaining players give their consent.
All pay outs by Binion's, and the tax reporting will reflect
the Deal allocation, but press releases and official WSOP
earnings reflect the scheduled, announced pay outs.
Jack McClelland tries to immediately squelch any "Deal
talking" in the Final Table area, and will stop the playing
clock and allow a "Deal break" at any time.
A normal Deal will probably allocate the bulk of the
remaining prize pool equally (or unequally, relative to chip
count, perceived ability, bargaining skills etc.) between
the remaining participants, with a small portion (perhaps 10
% or so) and the Title going to the eventual winner. Some
deals may earmark some of the un allocated portion to the
eventual second or third place finisher, in addition to the
allocation for the first place money.
Binion's attempts to prevent private Deals, which are
unenforceable and may present tax complications, by the
participants. Binion's probably would prefer a Deal free
environment all together, but recognizes that a top heavy
pay out structure is conducive to Deals, and has arrived at
the current procedure as the best solution.
PLAYER CONDUCT
Any player abusing employees or other players, either
verbally or physically (swearing, throwing cards, etc.) or
disrupting the tournament will be penalized. The following
will be the MINIMUM penalty imposed:
FIRST OFFENSE - 20 minutes away from the table.
(Blinds and/or antes to be forfeited)
SECOND OFFENSE - 40 minutes away from the table.
THIRD OFFENSE - Disqualification
The WSOP Floorpeople will be strictly enforcing the rules,
with zero tolerance. Every player starts each Event with a
clean slate as far as penalties are concerned.

TOURNAMENTS
Jack McClelland is assisted by Steve Morrow and Jeff
Vanderlip as Assistant Tournament Coordinators.
The 1998 WSOP continues the two-day format that was
inaugurated last year, for most of the tournaments. Also,
all two-day events start one level lower than in past years,
and each level at the Final Table has been lengthened from
60 minutes to 80 minutes. Limit Holdem and Omaha events have
two new levels of betting. First day play continues until
the field is reduced to the Final Table, and Final Table
play begins at 4:00 PM on the second day.
In addition to the money and a gold bracelet, each winner of
a 1998 WSOP Event will get free rooms at next year's WSOP.
If you win more than one Event, you can roll subsequent
hotel accommodations over to later years.
The extra betting levels added to this year's WSOP Events,
and the longer duration of levels at the Final Table,
"promised increased playability and a higher expected return
for the skilled player."
If "skilled player" equates to well known "world class
player", then the the higher expected return for the skilled
player has not been happening.
Except for a few scattered exceptions, the 1998 WSOP has
been dominated by lesser lights and relatively unknown
players.
POKER ROOM
Shift Supervisors Jimmy Stefan, John Buchanan, Tony Shelton
and Cathy Wood run the Poker room where the lower limit
games are played.

French movie actor, "pop-rock" singer, chess expert and
poker lover Patrick Bruel rode a rush of pot-winning hands
to victory in the world's Limit Hold'em Championship,
capturing his first gold winner's bracelet. It was the third
money finish this year for the 35 year-old Bruel who has his
own publishing and record company in Paris.
"I'm very happy," he said. "I'm not a limit player - I
normally play pot limit and no limit. I entered this
tournament because I won a satellite. The bracelet is more
important than the money. I don't play poker for money but
for fun, for the competition which I love."
Reflecting on his dizzying string of good hands, Bruel said,
"You have to respect luck in poker. Last year I went out
47th in the World Championship with pocket kings against
pocket tens when a ten fell on the river. I said to myself,
'if you don't want this, go back to chess.'" The amiable
Frenchman noted, "It was my pleasure to meet some real
gentlemen at the tables, and one was my last opponent, Bob
Redman."
The chip lead changed several times during their 90-minute
heads-up play but after winning a big pot early with a
gutshot top straight, Bruel was never in serious trouble.
For the last hour, Redman had almost no playable hands, and,
he said, "when I could play something, Patrick had something
better." In an anti-climactic final hand, Redman was all-in
with 8-7 of diamonds against Bruel's 9-7 offsuit which won
with a board of Q-J-3/6-10.
Redman, 5l, a nursing home operator and "strictly a
recreational player," said, "I feel wonderful" about
finishing second in his first WSOP tournament. "Sitting at
the table with fellows you've read about didn't intimidate
me but I felt awfully lucky to be there." He never went
all-in in the tournament until the end.
Tournament titan and former air traffic controller John
Cernuto vectored into his third final table this year and
took third, losing his initial chip lead because, he
reported, "I only had two premium pairs." Cernuto, 54, has
two bracelets among 17 cashes and 12 final tables since
1989. With total earnings of $705,612, he moved into 35th on
the Top Money Winners list. To send him home in third, Bruel
with A-9 flopped aces full.
Another stellar tournament performer, Vietnamese-born Men
Nguyen, finished fourth, his 21st final table in 24 cashes
since 1988. He has two WSOP titles and earnings of
$1,064,297, remaining 18th on the Top Money Winners list. "I
feel so bad but I'm happy to come this far," he said. Having
been crippled in a big pot with Bruel, Nguyen was knocked
out with A-7 of diamonds, flopping a nut flush draw but
running into Cernuto's top two pair which became a full
house on the river.
Newcomer Kevin McBride, 43, owner of a management consultant
business making his first trip to the WSOP, took fifth and
said, "I'm ecstatic to do as well as I did. I'm a
recreational player. It's a combination of skill and luck,
and sometimes people of average skill like me get some
luck." He was knocked out with A-10 by Redman's pocket
queens.
Sixth place went to 17-year poker pro Sam Grizzle, 45, his
sixth WSOP money finish. All-in with A-Q, he lost to
Redman's K-J with a board of J-7-2/7-8.
Vietnamese-born Anthony Tran, 37, making his first trip to
the World Series, finished seventh. "I'm having fun," he
said. "It was a tough table, all of them good players, some
of them the best. I had hoped to do better and I'll
certainly try in the future." Tran went all in with Q-10 and
flopped an open-ended straight draw, but Cernuto's pocket
kings became a flush on the river to win.
Formidable tournament veteran John Bonetti, 69, finished
eighth, moving past T.J. Cloutier into 10th on the Top Money
Winners list. This was the 12th final table in 20 cashes
since 1987 for the battling Bonetti who has three bracelets
and two third-place finishes in the Championship Event.
Ninth place went to Dan Alspach, 57, an engineer who has
been trying for 12 years to cash at the World Series. He was
knocked out in two hands in two minutes, losing with A-K to
Bruel's set of fours and with a nut flush to Tran's full
house.

First action reported in a betting round, normally means the
first player that put money into the pot in that betting
round. A check is usually not reported as the first action
in a betting round. Folds are not always reported. If there
are four players at the beginning of a betting round, and
it's reported that one player bets and is called by one
other player, then the remaining two players folded.
