CHANGE PARTNERS
On Day One, you play your brains out. You know the meaning
of every twitch, blink and cough of your table mates. You
know these players better than you know your third child.
Forget them.
They've given you all new partners for Day Two.
Out of 350 starters in Day One, 198 players survive the
first cut. In another 12 hours, 171 of those will have bled
to death.
In the Big Dance, they only pay 27 dancers. Everyone else
pays them.
TAPPED OUT
The bust out hands of players that follow, are of players we
know. Most of the details were given to us by a player at
the bust out table, after the fact, and may not be
completely accurate.
- We'll start the countdown to pay dirt with 60 players left.
-
60th - Yosh Nakano. He's all-in with 7's, Dan Harrington
calls with 10 8 and flops and 8.
-
59th - Dave "Devilfish" Ulliot. He bets his 3's. Jimmy Cha
calls with A 3. An Ace flops.
-
58th - Larry Satterwhite. A K against Vasilis Lazarou's 8's.
-
57th - John Gordon. He doesn't show his hand when Sam Chehab
has Aces.

-
47th - Frank Henderson. A no show when Mark Weitzman has K K.
-
46th - Blair Rodman. Blair's pocket tens flopped top set
against Tony Ma's A 6 of diamonds. Blair called all-in on
the flop, and runner, runner diamonds eliminated Blair.
-
Five Tables now

Jacks.
-
38th - Vasilis Lazarou. Loses to a higher flush when four
diamonds come.
-
37th - Debbie Burkhead. Her A 6 of Diamonds loses to Jack
Fox's Kings.
-
Four Tables, only one table to lose before payday.
-
36th - Tony Ma calls David Mosley all-in with the 7 6 of
Hearts. Mosley has 8's.
-
35th - Lew Fleming loses with a set over a set.
-
34th - Pat Fleming has Kings against Kathy Liebert's 9's.
Kathy makes a set.
-
33rd - Hertzel Zalewsky has A 6 of Hearts, and is called by
Barry Schwartz with Q J. Two Queens fall.
-
32nd - Tony Chaskelson has J 10 and is called by Mark
Weitzman with A Q.
-
31st - Sam Chaheb has A 4 of Diamonds and is called by Tommy
Jin Joo's K Q of Spades. An Ace flops with two spades. A
spade turns.
-
30th - Barry Schwartz goes all-in with 10's and is called by
Sooyoung Kim's Kings.
29th - James Brown is the shortest stack. He has to make a
move. Under the gun he goes all-in with a pair of 6's. T J
Cloutier calls with A J. Both an Ace and a Jack flop to set
up our dramatic finish.
With one player to eliminate, Jan Lundberg is the first to
make a move. He goes all-in with pocket Queens. David Mosley
calls with pocket 10's. Jan doubles up and is out of danger.
Very much in danger is Mark Brochard. With only $24,500,
Bouchard is the shortest stack. Mark is less than three
rounds away from being blinded and anted out of the game. If
he and everyone else fails to play a hand, Mark has to lose.
But the 28th and last player out of the money is not Mark
Bouchard, it's Mike Magee.
Magee has the button and an idea. Everyone would be playing
extra tight with only one player to go. No one had made a
significant bet in front of him. This was the time to pick
up some easy cash. Magee started the hand with about $60,000
and raised all-in pre flop.
It was just what Jack Fox had been hoping for. This was a
situation Jack had dreamt he'd be in. You limp, a shorter
stack goes all-in and there are no other callers.
Jack Fox had slow played Aces in front of Mike Magee.
Fox has to have the best hand before the flop. If Magee has
Aces also, Fox would only have to worry about a four flush
on board. If he loses the hand, he's still not busted. If he
wins, he and 26 others are in the money.
Now it was time to turn over cards. Mike Magee hesitates,
then shows the K J of hearts.
The crowd gasps. Jack Fox claps his hands.
The flop comes 2 5 3 rainbow with one heart. The railbirds
are craning their necks to see the action. Jack McClelland
announces the flop and then says "Jack Fox has the best hand
so far."
The turn is the King of Spades.
Jack says "Mike Magee needs a King or a Jack."
Jack Fox doesn't want to watch the river card fall. Five
outs is five outs too many for him, he turns away from the
table and looks up as if he is praying.
The river card is a 6.
Mark Brochard and Jack Fox can breath again. Mike Magee
suddenly can't.
10 CENTS A DANCE?
By the end of Day Two you've danced with so many partners
you wouldn't know a tell from a rumor. You've not only
played your brains out, you've played your heart out as well.
They were shipping players to your table faster than an
assembly line. You knocked them out as fast as they came.
You've forgotten how many times you've had to switch tables
yourself.
But now you can see everyone. More importantly, you can see
everyone's stacks.
In the dance of the musical tables, there are only three
tables left. You are one of only 27 with a seat. For your
guile, skill and luck you are going to get paid, no matter
what. You can't lose, you can only win bigger.
You've succeeded where 323 others have failed. But that was
only the first goal.
Now it's time to get serious. Now it's time to get to the
Final Table.

LAS VEGAS WEATHER
It was cool and windy in Las Vegas today. The Temperature
sign atop Binion's Horseshoe read 66 degrees at 11:00 AM on
Tuesday morning. The sky was overcast and the wind was out
of the SW at 10 to 30 mph.
We got down to 27 players at about 1:00 AM on Wednesday, and
the roads were wet out, so there had been some rain during
Day 2.
350
The official number of entries for the $10,000 Championship
Event is now 350, rather than the 352 that was reported
yesterday. Stu Ungar was eliminated from the Entry list, and
someone else also. No one at the Horseshoe is sure who was
eliminated, so our list is still at 351, until/unless we can
identify the missing entrant.
LADIES
Don Larrimore advises me that he has changed his count of
lady entrants from 14 to 13.
Kathy Liebert and Susie Isaacs are the only two ladies to
make the final 27.
SUSIE ISAACS
Susie's performance yesterday was amazing. Susie had ended
Day 1 with only $4,250 in chips, and seemed doomed to an
early exit. But she hung in there, won several big all-in
pots, and made the money.
Susie doubled through on two huge pots, where she held
pocket Kings. On the first one, she was all-in against Tibor
Tolnai's pocket Queens and spiked a King on the river, after
a Queen had come on the turn. The second time she was also
all-in, and won with a full house, but it was a scary one.
Aces full of Kings.
JACK KELLER
Another amazing performance was turned in by Jack Keller.
Jack had been one of the chip leaders all through Day 1 and
Day 2, until he lost a big pot late into Day 2. With around
40 players left, Scotty Nguyen raises about $120,000 all-in
pre-flop with A K, and Jack calls with pocket sixes. An Ace
comes on the river, and Jack is very, very unhappy, and only
has about $17,000 left.
It appears that Jack then went on major tilt, but perhaps not.
Apparently there was method to his madness. He moved all of
his chips into the pot on the next couple of hands, and
many, many times during the next half hour or so. Within an
hour at the most, Jack had regained all of his lost chips.
Simply amazing.
THREE OUTS FOR T.J.
T.J. Cloutier had also been a chip leader all day, getting
up around $200,000 very late in Day 1. Then he lost a couple
of pots and only had around $100,000 with about 30 players
remaining.
At that time, T.J. with an Q 10, played a hand against Ben
Roberts who had around $250,000 in chips and an A Q. The
flop was Q J X, and T.J. raised all-in and was called by
Ben. A ten on the river kept T.J. in the tournament, and
moved him back up among the chip leaders.
$10,000 CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL DAY
ESPN will be doing TV coverage of the Final Table of the
$10,000 Championship event, and it is scheduled to be aired

during the 1998 WSOP) and Vince Van Patten will be the
Celebrity Host for the telecast. Bleachers will surround the
Final Table in the Special Events room, and a large screen
TV will be set up in the Tournament Pavilion.
