The Showdown

Binion's Horseshoe, May 13, 1996 -- Nic Szeremeta, a writer for The Racing Post, a publication in Great Britain, defeated 80 opponents to capture first place in the World Series of Poker Press Invitational Tournament at Binion's Horseshoe Hotel and Casino. For his victory in the annual media event, Szeremeta was awarded $1,000.

Rob Langrell of the Las Vegas Sun pocketed $500 for his second-place finish and winning third place and $300 was Lee Jones who is associated with ConJelCo, a publisher of gaming books and software.

Finishing in fourth through ninth places respectively were: Charlie Barker of Sports Fan Radio Network in Las Vegas; Kim Scheinberg of Total Entertainment Network in New York; Peter Phillips of Kookaburra Press in Cairns, Australia; Steven Nover of the Las Vegas Review-Journal; Thom Curtis, the owner of Curtis Publications in Miami; Steve Kanigher of the Las Vegas Sun; and Don Larrimore of Hors Ligne in Geneva, Switzerland.

The $10,000 buy-in World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold'em competition begins today at noon and will run four consecutive days, ending on May 16 and concluding the 1996 World Series of Poker. More than 270 players, including reigning World Champion Dan Harrington, are expected to compete in the championship event, and $1 million is guaranteed to the winner.
