Las Vegas, April 23, 1997.
It was a warm, cloudless day in Las Vegas today with a wind that was
around 40mph/gusting to 50 before, during and after the Final Table.
This wind made life in the tented tournament area pretty exciting, and I
wouldn't have been surprised if the tent had collapsed on us. The wind
dislodged a large piece of foam rubber near the final table area, at the
juncture of the wall and ceiling of the tent, and it was rattling and
shaking the tent all day.
The attire at the final table was pretty conservative. Mostly long slack
type trousers with a couple of pairs of jeans, and one jogging suit
(Kevin Song, and it didn't look bad), some tennis type shoes, and everyone
except Dan Heimiller wore a long sleeve shirt or sweater or jacket. Dan
wore a black Tee shirt with white lettering that said "I do whatever the
voice in my head tells me to do". Huck Seed wore a sweater and
conservative trousers.
There was a costly administrative mistake made prior to the tournament
yesterday. Around 11:30 AM they announced that the tournament was sold
out (620 Entries) and that, contrary to WSOP tradition, the tournament
would start on time (12:00 Noon). Then they discovered a foul up in their
counting process, re-opened registration and ended up with only 544 entries
and started around 1:00 PM.
The side games continue to have full lists for about any limit you would
like to play. I've heard reports that the higher limit games are looser
than their lower limit counterparts.
Out of town rg'ers that are in attendance (that I know of):
Ed "HitTheFlop" Wolf, Bill Turner, Dave McVay, Tyler Wong, Mike McClain,
J P Massar, Jeff Siegal, Steve Brecher, and Ed Fernandez.

Final Table Chip Standings - Seat Positions
|
|

Capping a remarkable string of tournament successes,
Korean-born Kevin Song outlasted a record field of 544
players to capture the first event of the 1997 World Series
of Poker. For his victory in the $2,000 buy-in Limit
Hold'em competition, Song was awarded $397,120 and the
coveted gold winner's bracelet crafted by Neiman-Marcus.
Song, a 41 year-old former real estate broker and bank
manager, came to the United States in 1984. In just two and
a half years the popular poker professional has won nine
high-level tournaments and finished at more than 30 final
tables.
"I'm delighted," Song said as he accepted congratulations in
the new World Series pavilion at Binion's Horseshoe. "I
always dreamed about winning the first event at the World
Series and then the last. I went to church Sunday and
prayed for that. This is the first tournament where I
concentrated fully every minute."
Persevering at a noteworthy final table which included two
World Champions, Song eventually was heads-up against
Frenchman Yvan Lanvin whose aggressive style enlivened the
competition. Although they began about even in chips, Song
quickly surged into a dominating lead. After only 20
minutes Lanvin went all in with Qd-7s against Song's Kd-Qs.
The flop came J-8-3, all diamonds, and the diamond six on
the turn gave Song the title.
Lanvin, 51, has played poker for seven years after selling
his advertising agency on the French Riviera. His runner-up
finish in his first visit to the World Series, worth
$206,720, is the largest single win by a Frenchman to date.
Lanvin hopes to inaugurate tournament poker in the south of
France and to help improve the game's image in his native
country.
Third place went to Dan Heimiller of Livonia, Michigan, a 34
year-old former industrial engineer who is now a regular
tournament poker player. "I'm very pleased," he said, "but
to come in third is of course the best of times and the
worst of times all at once." This purse of $103,360 was
Heimiller's largest tournament win.
Although he started playing poker eight years ago, "I've
been playing well only for two years," he said. Last year
Heimiller won the best all-around player award at a large
tournament at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles.
Finishing fourth was Eric Seidel, who moved from 20th to
17th place on the WSOP Top Money Winners list and has now
won just $15,000 less than a million dollars at the annual
tournament.
Although he said "I didn't play too well today," current
World Champion Huck Seed took fifth place and remains number
seven on the WSOP millionaires' roster. He was preceded out
by Jack Lindsay who, narrowly the chip leader at start of
final table play, managed to win just two sets of blinds and
split one pot before being eliminated.
Former World Champion Berry Johnston came in seventh, his
30th time in the money at the WSOP where he stands third in
total winnings.
Eighth place went to John Montelepre, Jr., a "casual player"
and restaurateur who had never before entered a poker
tournament.
Veteran competitor John Esposito took ninth place.
Among the oddities at the final table, on two consecutive
hands Dan Heimiller went all in and survived against
opponents who both held Ac-5c. And early in the action,
John Esposito went all in with a pair of tens and found
himself with a freeroll against Jack Lindsay who had the
other two tens -- three spades were flopped but no more
followed, so the pot was split.
