Daily Report
Las Vegas, April 24, 1997. Las Vegas was cooler today with a high of about 80 degrees. The wind is still holding forth, but has come down to the 20 mph / gusting to 35 mph level which is manageable, and well within the structural tolerance limits of the tournament tent at Binion's. Yesterday OTOH, those limits were sorely tested.

I had a chat today with the camera man who is shooting the WSOP feeds for the internet. The url will be www.wsop.com, and they are hoping that it will be up and running sometime tomorrow. I don't understand how it works, but he said that it would be a real-time feed, and they were really targeting their efforts to get it working for the final event, but plan to practice on some of the earlier tournaments also. Jack McClelland's voice description of crucial action will accompany the video feed. Also, The Las Vegas Horseshoe should have a web presence at www.binionshorseshoe.com sometime this week.

My main focus in the WSOP reportorial assignment I have undertaken, is the card by card coverage of the final tables. So far, my tape recorder has worked out real well, and I don't think I have missed a single card or bet. Getting the info from tape to the web is another matter. The transcribing is tedious and takes a lot of time for an unskilled person like me. It took me from 7:30 PM PST last night until around 2:30 AM this morning to get the first draft of my daily report to Chuck W., and I think that he got it on the Web about 6:30 AM PST this morning. Then we spent all of the morning and most of the early afternoon changing formats, editing and fine tuning. We have done two revisions to the first draft, and if you saw an early version, you might want to look again. Suggestions for improvement are encouraged and welcome. I am about to begin transcribing today's Razz final table, and it will require a different format from the one we have arrived at for flop games. At this instant, I don't know how I'll handle some situations and will be grappling with them this evening. Hopefully, after we get the stud format workable, things will be a little more routine.

Chuck would like to have me report more WSOP color information, but as of now that is a secondary priority with me. Until (unless) I get better organized, I don't have much time for circulating and gathering information.

Here is a dose of vicariousness for today: There was a festive air around the final table, as about a third or more of the spectators were rabid Linda Johnson supporters and rooters, and Jack McClelland engaged in good natured, bantering conversation with her supporters throughout the event. Entirely different atmosphere from yesterday, when the decorum was a whole lot more somber. Most of the Linda Johnson people were wearing "Go Linda" baseball caps and waving little pennants with the same message. I don't know who, if anyone, was minding the store at the CARDPLAYER offices. CARDPLAYER was having a party at the Monte Carlo after the tournament, and had started the festivities early. Linda and Denny were extending party invitations pretty freely. The other players also participated in and seemed to enjoy the CARDPLAYER aura. Dr. Max Stern said that it was the most pleasant final table he had ever experienced.

The only comment I have on today's final table attire is what Linda J. told me to report. She said that she was well attired in a business suit, and Denny Axel directed me to state that her business partner (Denny) would be rooting for Linda in the bleachers, and that he was dressed like a bum.

Smoking note: Players were allowed to smoke, but spectators were not.

Missing Picture Card Player magazine publisher Linda Johnson powered to victory in the $1,500 buy-in Razz tournament, becoming the third woman in World Series history to capture an open title. Her convincing triumph over 159 competitors was worth $96,000 and catapulted Johnson to fifth place on the WSOP's Women's Top Money Winners list with total earnings of $104,195.

"It's a highlight for any poker player and a tremendous thrill," she said. She was swamped by enthusiastic well-wishers who had worn "Go Linda" caps and waved pennants for her through the last four grueling hours.

"I really enjoyed being at the final table in the most prestigious poker event in the world," Johnson said.

She was never in serious peril against her final seven opponents, losing the chip lead only briefly to runner-up Peter Brownstein. When they were finally heads up, Johnson began with about a three-to-one chip lead which grew relentlessly as Brownstein endured a crippling string of high cards obliging him to bring it in each time for $3,000. On the final hand, Johnson made a 6-5-4-3-A against his 8-7-5-3-2.

Brownstein, a 47 year-old financial planner who has played "casual poker -- generally tournments" for five years, collected $48,000, his largest ever win. "I can't tell you how happy I am," he said. "It's very rewarding.I put a lot of time into improving my game and eventually I will win one of these tournaments." He called Razz "a crazy game" with perfect low starts so often being destroyed. "I like it because there's not so much to memorize as in stud. Decisions are pretty cut and dried."

Third place and $24,000 went to Costa Rican born Dr. Max Stern, 57, a retired pediatrician and a familiar figure on the tournament circuit. This was his seventh in-the-money finish at the World Series and brought his total earnings to more than $200,000.

"I felt I had a great chance to win it," Stern said. "But the right cards didn't come. I have the greatest respect for my final two opponents-- they are excellent players."

Tom Watts, 74, a retired transport owner-operator, took fourth place prize money of $14,400, the first time he had cashed in the money at the World Series. "I feel good, but I should have played a little better and maybe won it," he said.

Fifth place and $12,000 went to Restie Bagaygay, who had placed in the money four times previously at the WSOP. He has now won more than $100,000 at the annual tournament.

Stan Goldstein, another tournment regular, was awarded $9,600 for sixth place. He was followed out by Chris Tsipraildis who won $7,200 for seventh and J.J.Chun who collected $4,800 for eighth place.

SPECIAL NEWS

For the first time since the World Series of Poker began in 1970, the final table of the Championship will be staged under the Fremont Street Experience canopy outside Binion's Horseshoe.

Bleachers and air conditioning will be provided when the final six contenders vie for the title and $1,000,000.

Silver commemorative card keepers are still available at the pavilion kiosk and the west-side gift shop.
